The battles out of stealth are quick, brutal, challenging, and satisfying. While the gameplay loop is a fairly far cry from the God of War, Ghost of Tsushima features a combat system that many games could learn from.

Then it seemed like all their bigger stuff ended up getting delayed out of previously announced windows until the last few years of the gen.The PS4 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima is a game that almost anyone with a PS4 or PS5 should play if they haven't already, as the game is a gorgeous example of what Sony's platforms are capable of. Uncharted 4, TLOU followup, FF7R, Last Guardian were all in reality further out than people thought.

FromSoft was at their peak popularity and it's the best early-ish exclusive on either of the two consoles. The value of Sony getting Bloodborne locked down exclusive was cannot be overstated imo.

Driveclub PS+ (Announced to be free on PS+ in launch window, multiple delays, free version didn't launch until 2 years later and was removed within a few months). The Witness (touted as a launch window console exclusive, delayed ~3 years and released on Xbox the same year).Planetside 2 (Not sure if this was as big a deal as people hoped? Never heard much about it post launch).Octodad (Went multiplatform quickly, pretty small scale).Grim Fandango (Went multiplatform quickly, good but old game).

I remember all the reasons people would tell themselves for getting PS4's near launch when they didn't want to admit to themselves it was for remastered PS3 games or far off releases. Rather than new techniques and level layouts, we're now stuck with what's possible on base PS4 hardware (impressive as the devs have been at dealing with that), which is nearly 10 years old. The 2018 God of War had those long level transitions in the tree and choke point corridors. Vistas, traversal, narrow corridors, shallow draw distance, limited geometry (think of the mini-open world section of Seattle in TLoU P2, that's all the bigger they can likely make that section on PS4 hardware but on PS5, the entirety of Seattle could likely be 1 large interconnected area with similar levels of detail and interactiveness). Listen to Naughty Dog talk about how levels are made with the system's limitations in mind. But people were hoping that the levels themselves and the gameplay would be designed to take advantage of the new hardware and now that's not possible. Better resolution and FPS for sure, add in ray tracing to a degree and better textures. The differences between gen versions will be slight.
